Modified sine wave or pure sine wave inverter?

Pure Sine Wave inverters provide the following advantages over modified sine wave inverters:

a) The output voltage waveform is a pure sine wave with extremely little harmonic distortion and clean power comparable to that provided by the utility.

b) Inductive loads such as microwave ovens and motors operate more quickly, quietly, and efficiently.

c) Reduces electrical and audible noise in fans, fluorescent lights, audio amplifiers, televisions, game consoles, fax machines, and answering machines.

d) Prevents computer crashes, strange printing, and glitches and noise in displays.

e) Powers reliably the following devices that do not often function with modified sine wave inverters:

Photocopiers, laser printers, and magneto-optical hard drives

Certain laptop computers (you should check with your manufacturer)

A few fluorescent light fixtures with electronic ballasts

Tools with “solid state” power or variable speed control

a number of battery chargers for cordless power equipment

New pellet stoves and furnaces with microprocessor control

Digital clocks that include radios

Sewing machines with microprocessor- and speed-control

X-10 home automation system

Medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators

DonRowe.com has an extensive selection of Pure Sine Wave and Modified Sine Wave Power Inverters. Modified Sine Wave is the most popular and cost-effective form of inverter on the market. It is also suitable for the majority of applications. Pure Sine Wave inverters (also referred to as True Sine Wave) are better suited for sensitive electrical or electronic devices such as laptop computers, stereos, laser printers, and certain specialised applications such as medical equipment, a pellet stove with an internal computer, digital clocks, bread makers with multi-stage timers, and variable speed or rechargeable tools (see ” Appliance Cautions” below). Choose a Pure Sine Wave inverter if you intend to utilise these devices with a power converter. A Modified Sine Wave inverter is enough for your requirements if you primarily want to power appliances such as lights, a television, a microwave oven, and tools.

Frequently, we get asked whether computers are compatible with Modified Sine Wave. Our experience has shown that most (with the exception of a few computers) will function (though some monitors will have interference such as lines or a hum). However, if you are uncertain about the compatibility of any appliance, tool, or gadget, especially laptop computers and medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, we advise you to contact the manufacturer to confirm that it is compatible with a Modified Sine Wave inverter. If not, consider instead one of our Pure Sine Inverters.

The Pure Sine Wave inverter is superior and delivers cleaner current. Additionally, they are substantially more costly. You may find it sensible to purchase a small Pure Sine Wave inverter for “special needs” and a bigger Modified Sine Wave inverter for all other purposes.
