Energy Relief for Your Home and Your Business

Energy efficiency tips for the office

Energy efficiency may have a significant impact on the total cost of energy at the business. These tips significantly reduce power consumption:

  • Replace incandescent desk lamps and overhead illumination with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
  • Utilize dimmers, motion sensors, or occupancy sensors to switch off lights automatically when they are not in use, therefore reducing energy expenditures and consumption.
  • Turn off the lights as you depart for the evening. Use daylighting or natural illumination. Whenever possible, switch off lights next to windows.
  • Utilize task lighting; instead of illuminating a whole space with bright light, direct the light where it is needed to directly brighten work areas.
  • The workplace should acquire energy-efficient equipment and energy-saving solutions.
  • Close or adjust window shades to prevent direct sunlight during warm months to minimize cooling demands. South-facing windows are most effectively shielded from sunlight by overhangs or outdoor window coverings.
  • Throughout the winter, open the curtains on south-facing windows during the day to enable natural sunshine to heat your office. Close the curtains at night to prevent heat loss.
  • Unplug energy-consuming devices while not in use (i.e. cell phone chargers, fans, coffeemakers, desktop printers, radios, etc.).
  • Replace desktop PCs with thin clients, laptops, and docking stations.
  • Use LED or liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors.
  • If feasible, turn off your computer and displays at the end of the workday. If you will be away from your workstation for a lengthy period of time, switch off your display.
  • Utilize copiers with minimal standby power. Purchase and use printers and fax machines with a power management function.
  • Coordinate with the seller of the vending machines to turn off the advertising lights.
  • Complete an energy audit. Consult your utility provider for a list of auditors.
  • Install programmable thermostats and inspect the furnace ducts for leaks or disconnections. Ensure that ductwork is adequately insulated.
  • Reduce heat loss by insulating the water heater, hot water pipes, and storage tanks.
  • Install water-efficient commodes, urinals, faucets, and showerheads.
  • Verify that the energy management system enters setback mode when the building is vacant.
  • Install meters for energy monitoring.
